The construction of the mausoleum began during Qin Shi Huang's reign (221-210 BCE) and took around 38 years to complete. It was built using local materials such as yellow earth from nearby hills and stone from distant mountains. The three pits containing the terracotta army are named Pit 1, Pit 2, and Pit 3. Pit 1 is the largest pit with an area of about 14 acres; it contains over 6,000 terracotta soldiers arranged in battle formation. Pit 2 has around half as many soldiers but features more complex formations; it also includes cavalrymen on horseback or riding chariots alongside infantrymen armed with swords or bows.
